Associate Director (India)

In alignment with our mission to improve the welfare of fish as much as possible, Fish Welfare Initiative is seeking an Associate Director to co-lead our team in India. For this role, we're looking for someone who is an exceptional strategist and leader—someone who can empower and guide our team and our impact as we continue to grow.

Who We Are 

Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is a startup organization whose mission is to improve the welfare of fish as much as possible. We focus specifically on farmed fish, or fish raised in aquaculture.

We collaborate with corporations, governments, and producers to improve animal welfare standards in aquaculture. We believe that this is the right thing for fish, farmers, and consumers.
 

How You Will Make a Difference

The following are the core responsibilities of the Associate Director:

1. Strategy Development and Execution

  • Work closely with the Managing Director to implement our current theory of change for the proliferation and implementation of fish welfare standards in India.

  • Work with the Managing Director to develop and execute future strategies.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of animal-based food systems. 

  • Develop a working knowledge of India’s governmental and non-governmental institutions which can promote fish welfare.

2. Operational Duties

  • Assist the Managing Director in running the day-to-day operation of the Alliance of Responsible Aquaculture (ARA). 

  • Oversee our corporate partnerships.

  • Assist the managing director in ensuring the well-being of the India team. 
     

3. Miscellaneous Duties

  • Build and maintain relationships with counterparts in the animal protection movement to promote synergy and collaboration.

  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Managing Director, India.
     

Qualifications

Required Criteria

You must meet all of these in order to be eligible for this position:

  • Willing to live at least 6 months of the year in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

  • Exceptional English communication and self-management skills.

  • Comfort in an intense, high-energy work environment.

  • Willing to travel extensively.

  • Personally committed to improving the lives of fish and farmers.


What Would Be Nice to Have

We encourage you to apply even if you only meet some of these:​​

  • 2-8 years or more of experience managing a team. 

  • Masters/bachelors in any social sciences, development studies, development economics, environmental sciences, BA LLB, or similar areas.

  • One or more years of experience with projects in the farm animal protection sector.

  • Ability to speak Telugu & Hindi.

  • A good understanding of food systems or policy experience.

  • Knowledgeable of and aligned with the core values of effective altruism.

The Fine Print

  • Location: Vijayawada for at least 6 months out of the year, otherwise flexible.

  • Position Status: Full-time.

  • Benefits: Health insurance, flexible hours, startup atmosphere.

  • Start Date: ASAP, with some flexibility.

  • Pay: 1 to 2.5 lakhs/month, commensurate to need and experience.
